How to compute the date of Attestato di transito

Few years ago I drove on the highway and before exiting, I had to pay: the highway was not toll free. In Italy on the “attestato di transito/ricevuta di pedaggio” usually you find only the time. The date is displayed as days elapsed since 1st of January. In the picture you see 356. Uh, good: I know it was the 356th of the year. And what is the date?!

Using Excel, you can get a fast answer. Be careful not being too fast ;-)

In A1 you can enter the first day of the year, 1/1/2011, then in A2 enter 356. Finally, in A3 add the values entering this formula: =A1+A2. You get 23/12/2011. Is it correct? NO! Be careful, from the final result you have to subtract 1, because you must count also the starting day.

Stll confused? Let’s try with a very simple example: in A2 enter 5, You get as result in A3: 1/6/2011. It is wrong! We expect to get as result 1/5/2011. Now it is clear that you must subtract 1 from the final result. And the final formula in A3 is:  =A1+A2-1
